LG Electronics will unveil the “world’s first market-ready” 3G watch phone at CES in Las Vegas this week. The LG-GD910, featuring built-in 3G video telephony service along with quadband GSM, is an upgrade of a prototype showcased last year.

LG claims the LG-GD910 to be “the first touch watch phone in the world to feature 7.2 Mbps 3G HSDPA compatibility, enabling high-speed data transmission and video phone calls using the built-in camera.”

Features added since last year’s prototype include a full touchscreen interface, 3G wireless support, and video calling capabilities, according to LG. “Most importantly,” the new version “will actually be available for purchase … some time in 2009,” the company promises.

Stylistically, the device features a curved tempered glass face and a thin (14mm), high quality metal casing. “People will be comfortable wearing it for any occasion,” claims LG. It’s sure to please true geeks, at any rate.

Besides keeping accurate time, the device provides voice and video calling, text messaging, and MP3 player capabilities. Other touted features include:

  • 7.2 Mbps 3G HSDPA wireless communications
  • 1.4-inch (3.6cm) touchscreen display
  • Intuitive Flash-based user interface
  • Voice recognition, usable for placing calls and looking up contacts
  • Text-to-speech (TTS) for reading text messages and other information
  • Compatible with Bluetooth headsets (but usable without a headset)
  • Stereo Bluetooth and a built-in speaker for playing back music files
  • Large phonebook and scheduler
