Boxee adds Blinkx app

The Boxee Box recently gained an app for Blinkx, claimed to be the world’s largest video search engine. It’s said to offer access to 35 million hours of video.

Blinkx says its service offers more content from a broader range of sources than either Google or Yahoo. In contrast to YouTube, which hosts an enormous repository of video, Blinkx does not host the video content it offers to its users. Blinkx says its search engine technology is based on “a unique combination of patented conceptual search, speech recognition, and video analysis software to efficiently, automatically, and accurately find and qualify online video.”

Blinkx says new Boxee app will let you “seamlessly search, discover, and watch professionally produced Internet video from top content partners across blinkx’s index of 35 million hours of video content.” It will be organized in three channels:

  • Popular — an editorialized roundup of the most popular videos from across the Web, including the latest shocking news from Hollywood and jaw-dropping human feats
  • News — “a breaking news channel featuring top news stories from around the world, culled from the Inform Me channel on blinkx.com”
  • Fun! — “a riveting playlist of hilarious bloopers, amazing stunts, ridiculous pranks and cute animals, drawn from blinkx Beat”
