Following nearly three years of alpha- and beta-level releases, Boxee’s A/V-streaming software platform will finally go gold at a November 10 launch event in New York City. However, v1.0 initially will be limited to D-Link’s Boxee Box, with versions for PCs running OS X, Windows, and Linux coming later.

Last month, we learned from Gartner that Android will probably be the number-two worldwide mobile OS this year, and may lead the pack by 2014. With Android’s growing use as the OS embedded in phones, netbooks, tablets, set-top boxes, and LCD HDTVs, we can’t help wondering: will the Linux-based OS soon dominate the entire non-PC consumer device OS market?

Having already previewed the Ubuntu 10.10 beta with good results on more than one system, I felt safe upgrading my primary desktop system from v10.04 to v10.10 once the new version went gold. To my astonishment, neither my keyboard, mouse, nor display were functioning following the upgrade.

[Updated Oct. 22, 2010] — Following months of teasers, Logitech finally launched its Google TV player today at simultaneous press events in New York and San Francisco. The company’s Google TV family includes the Android-based “Revue” STB (set-top box), large and mini remote controls, free iPhone and Android remote control apps, and a video cam.

Google today revealed more information regarding its soon-to-be-released “Google TV” platform. Among other interesting capabilities, the flexible Linux-based platform for delivering Internet-streamed A/V content to TVs will support thousands of TV-oriented Android apps, turning our TVs into “smart-TVs.”

Sonos has released its new remote controller app for the iPad to Apple, and expects it to show up as a free download in the iTunes app store September 29. The app, which joins a similar one for iPhones and iPod Touches, enables owners of Sonos media streaming devices to control their gadgets without requiring the company’s somewhat pricey dedicated wireless remote.

Oracle today unveiled an “Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel” for its branded, Red Hat-based Linux distribution. The company describes the new kernel, which will now be offered as an option for Oracle Linux, as a “fast, modern, reliable kernel … optimized for Oracle software and hardware.”

A new Linux distribution has spun off from Mandriva Linux due to the liquidation of Edge-IT, through which most of Mandriva’s developers reportedly had been employed. “We believe a fork is the best solution and we have decided to create a new distribution,” states the new community-based project on its website.

Gartner expects Android to be the number two mobile operating system worldwide this year, behind only Symbian. Additionally, the market research firm expects the upstart OS to challenge Symbian for the top position by 2014.
