[Updated Jan 27, 2013] — Boxee released version 1.5 of its free multimedia streaming software for Mac, Windows, and Linux desktops today, but simultaneously announced that it will cease offering the Boxee desktop software after January 2012. Thereafter, the company will limit its focus to devices such as the D-Link Boxee Box.

Netflix has just consumed the Boxee Box remote control’s play/pause button. The only thing the bright red Netflix button will do now is launch the Netflix app, no matter what the box had been doing.

Boxee has released a bug-fix update to the Boxee Box’s firmware. Version 1.2.1, a mandatory upgrade, deals primarily with issues relating to SMB (Windows shares) functionality, syncing, and streaming, according to its release notes.

Spotify music streaming comes to the Boxee Box

Spotify’s music-streaming web service is now available on the Boxee Box. Users subscribed at Spotify’s premium level can browse music according to artist, album, record label, genre, or playlist, and also using direct searches.
