The regional University Transportation Research Centers (UTRCs) in the U.S. have launched a new distance-learning program to educate “transportation leaders for the 21st century.” The online graduate-level certification program aims to “nurture individuals with potential leadership qualities in both the public and private sectors, and to assist them in moving along the promotion track from excellent technical contributions to management responsibilities and eventually on to leadership roles.”

The IEEE is soliciting papers for technical presentations at its first international “Forum on Integrated and Sustainable Transportation Systems” (FISTS) conference, to be held in Vienna next June. The event will cover the latest technologies and developments in traffic and transportation within the land, air, and water domains.

The Research and Innovative Technology Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation is in the midst of the first year of a five-year strategic plan for research on intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The plan “explores the potentially transformative capabilities of wireless technology to make surface transportation safer, smarter, and greener and ultimately enhance livability for Americans,” says the DOT.

A report published earlier this year by a Washington D.C. based think tank recommends that the U.S. significantly increase its investment in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) at the federal level, by $2.5 to $3 billion annually. The infusion of funds would go toward large-scale ITS demonstration projects, new ITS deployments, and ongoing operations and maintenance of existing ITS deployments.

eCoMove, a new EU research project, is developing “green ITS” (intelligent transport systems) technologies and applications for energy-efficient driving. The project plans to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 20 percent, through the use of the latest cooperative communication, traffic control, and infrastructure technologies.

The market for ITS (intelligent transport systems) related communications services in Europe will achieve 2.9 billion Euros ($3.5 billion at current exchange rates) aggregate annual revenue by 2020, forecasts InnovITS ADVANCE. This would represent about 4.5 percent of the total European market for telematics and data communications, according to the U.K.-based ITS R&D facility.
