D-Link’s Boxee Box can now be ordered from Amazon for November delivery (to US destinations only). Additionally, the company disclosed today that its device is based on an Intel Atom processor CE4100, representing a significant triumph for Intel over ARM Ltd.

Microsoft tops commercial mobile device OS vendors

Microsoft has become the dominant supplier of commercial embedded operating systems targeting mobile devices, says VDC. This is largely due to the fact that Microsoft’s major competitors either make their own devices or are consortia that provide their platforms under open-source licenses, reports the market analyst firm.

Annual telematics conference set for Munich

Europe’s “biggest and most relevant event” targeting the automotive, mobile, and wireless telematics industry will be held in Munich this Fall. Telematics Munich 2010, to be held Nov. 3-4, is expected to draw more than 400 telematics “leaders and decision makers,” say event organizers.

Boxee puffs up with thousands more free movies

Boxee users can now search, browse, and watch thousands more free movies from six Internet sources, thanks to an enhanced Movie Library function in the latest Boxee beta release. Boxee, a free Internet A/V-streaming software platform with an easy-to-use “10-foot UI” (user interface), supports OS X, Windows, and Linux PCs plus the AppleTV set-top-box (STB).

Android beats iPhone in key market metric

Market researcher Nielsen reports that Google’s Android OS grabbed a greater share of recent smartphone sales than Apple’s iPhone did. Additionally, smartphones have now achieved a 25 percent share of the U.S. mobile phone market and are expected to surpass featurephones by the end of next year.
