Are cars the ultimate mobile devices?

Ford claims that its American Journey 2.0 research project culminated in the world’s first social media-connected road trip. Along the way from Ann Arbor, Mich. to the Maker Faire in San Mateo, Calif, Ford engineers and University of Michigan (U-M) students demonstrated the “first-ever auto-centric cloud-based apps,” claims the automaker.

Vehicular Networking Conference solicits papers

The second annual IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference today launched its conference website and issued a call for papers. Scheduled for Dec. 13-15, 2010 in New Jersey, IEEE VNC 2010 will cover a wide range of networking topics, including V2V, V2I, and VANET communications, as well as the overall impact of connected vehicles on transportation efficiency and safety.

U.S. DOT aims geospatial data at freight transport optimization

NAVTEQ says the U.S. Department of Transportation will use its map data across a wide range of research and analysis programs aimed at bringing advanced technologies into the nation’s transportation system. Initially, the company’s geospatial information and services will be incorporated into GeoMiler, a route-modeling application aimed at optimizing the performance of the nation’s freight transportation system.

Google service fosters cooperative parking

A new Google Labs webservice aims to help drivers find and share parking spaces. Using this new cooperative service, which unsurprisingly requires the use of Android-based smartphones, “we’ll all save time, save gas, and reduce pollution,” says Google.

PopBox STB to ship soon, but sans Netflix, Pandora

Syabas says it is nearly ready to ship the PopBox, which it announced in January. The $129 Internet-based A/V streaming set-top box (STB) will offer a variety of user-selectable media-streaming apps, but probably won’t include Netflix, Pandora, or Amazon PPV support at launch.
