In-vehicle telematics and Internet to grow sharply

The market research firm expects all major vehicle manufacturers to begin selling an increasing proportion of their vehicles with these systems factory installed over the next decade.

In a keynote talk at the Hot Chips conference in Silicon Valley this week, Burkhard Huhnke, Executive Director of Volkswagen’s California-based Electronics Research Lab (VW-ERL), shared VW’s vision of what cars and their infrastructure may be like two decades from now. Among other advancements, VW aims to bridge the gap between consumer electronics and vehicles, creating intelligent, networked vehicles that interact with each other, their occupants, and both their physical and virtual surroundings.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has issued a progress report on its current 5-year Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) strategic research plan. The plan’s goal is to advance the development of a nationwide wireless information network connecting all vehicles and infrastructure, in order to dramatically enhance safety, mobility, and environmental performance.
The compact, Linux-powered Pogoplug device has just gained a $29 WiFi adapter companion, which enables it to work wirelessly. The new Pogoplug Wireless Adapter appears to be a standard USB 802.11 b/g/n WiFi adapter of undisclosed origin and chipset, and works with all current Pogoplugs.
