Web-centric gaming handheld runs Windows 7 on Oak Trail

Ocosmos unveiled a pocket-sized, multifunction, multimedia handheld running Windows 7 at an Intel Developer Forum keynote Tuesday in San Francisco. Among the first demonstrated handhelds to incorporate Intel’s new “Oak Trail” SoC (system-on-chip processor), the OCS1 boasts a 4.8-inch touch-screen, slide-out keyboard, WiFi, 3G, GPS, speaker, camera, web browsing, and PC-compatible peer-to-peer gaming.

Back to the Futurama with cooperative mobility

A GM-sponsored exhibition at the 1939 New York World’s Fair portrayed a transportation-centric world 20 years hence, complete with vast superhighway networks. Interestingly, GM’s “Futurama” accurately predicted wireless-enabled cooperative mobility technologies that are just now — 70 years later — being readied for deployment.

Google service fosters cooperative parking

A new Google Labs webservice aims to help drivers find and share parking spaces. Using this new cooperative service, which unsurprisingly requires the use of Android-based smartphones, “we’ll all save time, save gas, and reduce pollution,” says Google.

Using a PogoPlug as an iPod server

I recently acquired an iPod Touch, and soon found myself with an 80GB iPod paperweight knocking around and collecting dust. Then it hit me: why not use a Pogoplug as an iPod server, effectively filling my nifty new iPod Touch with 80GB of music whenever I have WiFi access!

UMPCs, netbooks, and MIDs, oh my!

Shipments of Ultra-Mobile Devices (UMDs), including a range of emerging devices such as UMPCs (Ultra-Mobile PCs), netbooks, and MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices), are expected to grow to 385 million units annually within five years. Their main obstacle will be smartphones, such as the iPhone and various Android models.
