Boxee announced today that it has added an official app for watching TED’s full database of nearly 800 TED Talks using Boxee’s free A/V streaming player software on PCs running Windows, OS X, and Linux.

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) says its annual four-day conferences gather together 1,000 “leading thinkers and doers” for what aims to be “the highlight of their year.” TED’s speakers typically are well known experts, inventors, personalities, journalists, politicians, Nobel laureates, and other key influencers and newsmakers.

If you’ve never watched a TED talk, they’re well worth checking out. The talks are designed to challenge the intellect, and typically are both entertaining and educational. Recent examples include U.S. President Bill Clinton, author Isabel Allende, legendary biologist EO Wilson, designer Phillipe Starck, and Virgin CEO Richard Branson; in 2008, speakers included brain expert Jill Bolte Taylor, physicist Stephen Hawking and undersea explorer Robert Ballard.

The Boxee-developed TED app lets explore TED videos five ways: by featured, themes, tags, length, and keyword search. Themes include categories such as The Creative Spark, Tales of Invention, Unconventional Explanations, What’s Next in Tech, Master Storytellers, and Bold Predictions & Stern Warnings; and tags include Technology, Biology, Economics, Storytelling, Brain, Art, Politics, etc.

Boxee is a free Internet A/V-streaming software platform with an easy-to-use “10-foot UI” (user interface). It supports OS X, Windows, and Linux PCs, plus the Apple’s AppleTV set-top-box (STB). It also serves as the primary user interface on dedicated STBs such as the new Boxee Box from D-Link, which is now available for preorder on Amazon.

Boxee can be downloaded free of charge (with registration) from Boxee’s website.
