The Android invasion cometh: is resistance futile?

Last month, we learned from Gartner that Android will probably be the number-two worldwide mobile OS this year, and may lead the pack by 2014. With Android’s growing use as the OS embedded in phones, netbooks, tablets, set-top boxes, and LCD HDTVs, we can’t help wondering: will the Linux-based OS soon dominate the entire non-PC consumer device OS market?

Sony bakes Google TV into HDTVs, Blu-ray player

Close on the heals of Logitech’s launch of the first set-top Google TV player, Sony has started shipping LCD HDTVs and a Blu-ray player with embedded Google TV capabilities. The devices have built-in WiFi, and come with wireless remote control keyboards.

Nissan Leaf info hub runs Windows Automotive

The Nissan Leaf electric car’s “easy-to-use touch-screen Information Hub” will run Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Automotive operating system. But not to worry: it won’t be driving or controlling the car, so fear not the dreaded BSOD.

Logitech launches first Google TV player

[Updated Oct. 22, 2010] — Following months of teasers, Logitech finally launched its Google TV player today at simultaneous press events in New York and San Francisco. The company’s Google TV family includes the Android-based “Revue” STB (set-top box), large and mini remote controls, free iPhone and Android remote control apps, and a video cam.

Boxee adds official TED talks app

Boxee announced today that it has added an official app for watching TED’s full database of nearly 800 TED Talks using Boxee’s free A/V streaming player software on PCs running Windows, OS X, and Linux.
