GM formally introduces the Chevy Volt

Casting it as the “world’s first mass-produced, plug-in electric vehicle with a range-extending onboard engine,” GM formally launched the five-door, four-passenger Chevrolet Volt today. It’s “designed to provide the benefits of an electric vehicle without the range limitations associated with other electric vehicles in the market,” says GM. In related news, however, the Web is abuzz with assertions that the Volt actually is a PHEV (plug-in hybrid EV), not an ER-EV (extended-range EV).

Report prescribes cure for “ailing” U.S. transportation system

A conference held last year to assess the state of the U.S. transportation system has just published a 92-page report detailing its findings. Despite the fact that transportation systems are the “backbone of America” and keep it “strong and moving,” the bipartisan report concludes, “we have not been taking good care of this resource.”
