EU conference evaluates transport system progress
July 16, 2010 At the third biennial Transport Research Arena (TRA) conference held in Brussels last month, leading researchers, companies, and decision makers in the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) industry explored ways to solve today’s most pressing problems, and plotted the course of next-generation public mobility and transportation systems.

 The U.S. DOT’s Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS-JPO) will hold a free workshop later this month, at which IntelliDrive Safety program research roadmaps — including applications, technical, and policy activities — will be presented and discussed. There is no charge for attending the three-day event in Chicago July 20-22, and a free webinar and phone conference are also available.

Terrafugia says it has received a special exemption from the FAA, allowing its Transition “flying car” to have a maximum takeoff weight of 1430 pounds (650 kg). The extra 110 pounds enables the vehicle to be equipped with safety features such as air bags, a crumple zone, and a protective safety cage, while still being classified as a Light Sport Aircraft.
