A look at Ford’s crash avoidance research

Ford today announced details of its research on advanced crash avoidance systems. The company’s “Automatic Braking Intersection Collision Avoidance System” (ABICAS), currently under development, uses radio-based wireless sensors, GPS, and navigation information to detect the relative location of other radio-equipped test vehicles.

Florida ITS conference to preview IntelliDrive

A regional conference for experts and stakeholders in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), traffic engineering and operations, and transportation planning will be held this December in Florida. “Transpo2010” will feature technical presentations, discussion, training, tours of nearby ITS facilities, and a technology expo, among other ITS-oriented activities.

Are cars the ultimate mobile devices?

Ford claims that its American Journey 2.0 research project culminated in the world’s first social media-connected road trip. Along the way from Ann Arbor, Mich. to the Maker Faire in San Mateo, Calif, Ford engineers and University of Michigan (U-M) students demonstrated the “first-ever auto-centric cloud-based apps,” claims the automaker.

Whitepaper introduces U.S. DOT’s IntelliDrive vision

A whitepaper published by the U.S. DOT (Department of Transportation) provides a quick introduction to the DOT’s new IntelliDrive initiative. The program, which comprises a major portion of DOT’s current five-year ITS (intelligent transportation systems) Strategic Research Plan, aims to enhance safety, mobility, and environmental factors via wireless connectivity among ground vehicles, infrastructure, and passengers’ devices.
