Make a ‘green’ New Year’s resolution

Last updated Dec 17, 2008 — 208 views

It’s time to start thinking about our New Year’s resolutions. If you’re one of millions who’d like to help fight global warming in 2009, the U.S. Energy Star initiative invites you to make a non-binding online pledge.

The pledge suggests eight ways you can save energy, and asks you to affirm your dedication to this goal by checking boxes on a 1-page questionnaire. Energy-saving steps you can resolve to take during the coming year include:

  • Replace at least one light in my home with an Energy Star qualified one
  • Make my home heating and cooling system work better
  • Make sure my home is well sealed and insulated
  • Choose Energy Star qualified equipment for my home office
  • Enable my Energy Star computer and monitor to sleep while I’m away
  • Choose Energy Star qualified home theater products
  • Choose Energy Star qualified products for my kitchen and laundry
  • Purchase Energy Star holiday lights this holiday season

So, what do you say? Why not make reducing your carbon footprint one of your 2009 New Year’s resolutions by filling out the online pledge form. (Note: please select “Climate Savers Computing” from the drop-down menu in answer to “How did you find out about the pledge?”)

Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. Its goal is “helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.”
