Review: Ubuntu 10.10 upgrade double-whammy

Having already previewed the Ubuntu 10.10 beta with good results on more than one system, I felt safe upgrading my primary desktop system from v10.04 to v10.10 once the new version went gold. To my astonishment, neither my keyboard, mouse, nor display were functioning following the upgrade.

Sonos remote control comes to the iPad

Sonos has released its new remote controller app for the iPad to Apple, and expects it to show up as a free download in the iTunes app store September 29. The app, which joins a similar one for iPhones and iPod Touches, enables owners of Sonos media streaming devices to control their gadgets without requiring the company’s somewhat pricey dedicated wireless remote.

Oracle rolls out “unbreakable” Linux kernel

Oracle today unveiled an “Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel” for its branded, Red Hat-based Linux distribution. The company describes the new kernel, which will now be offered as an option for Oracle Linux, as a “fast, modern, reliable kernel … optimized for Oracle software and hardware.”

Linux project plans Mandriva fork

A new Linux distribution has spun off from Mandriva Linux due to the liquidation of Edge-IT, through which most of Mandriva’s developers reportedly had been employed. “We believe a fork is the best solution and we have decided to create a new distribution,” states the new community-based project on its website.
