Review: Ubuntu 10.10 upgrade double-whammy

Having already previewed the Ubuntu 10.10 beta with good results on more than one system, I felt safe upgrading my primary desktop system from v10.04 to v10.10 once the new version went gold. To my astonishment, neither my keyboard, mouse, nor display were functioning following the upgrade.

Peppermint Ice resuscitates an elderly Thinkpad

Bucking the trend toward ever beefier and bulkier Linux distributions, the Peppermint OS project recently unveiled the first release of a lighter-weight variant of its small-footprint Linux OS. Since “Peppermint Ice” targets netbooks and older, resource-constrained laptops and PCs, I dusted off a well-worn ThinkPad 2662-35U, loaded it up with the new OS, and took it for a spin.

Previewing and tweaking Ubuntu 10.10

On September 1st, the Ubuntu development project issued the beta version of Ubuntu 10.10 — aka “Maverick Meerkat” — as a step toward achieving a stable release by October 10th. If a quick test of the beta by DeviceGuru is any indication, this new Ubuntu version could be the most user-friendly, full-featured desktop Linux distribution ever.

In-depth review: Sonos streaming-music players

Sonos offers an interesting family of high-quality devices capable of playing audio streamed from a variety of Internet and local sources wirelessly throughout the home. I’ve just spent a few weeks getting to know the Sonos ZonePlayer S5 and 90 streaming-music players. How well did they perform?
